I’m sure you have heard about Vision Boards or at least the idea of one, right? Do you know what they are? Do you know why they are important to make? Today, I’m going to break it down for you.

To answer the question “why are they important to make?”- it’s the old saying “no one is going to knock on your door and deliver your dream life to you. It is up to you to go out and make it happen!” I certainly have dreams and am not willing to settle for a ho-hum life, are you?

So, let’s continue. Here is a short story on why I am a believer in Vision Boards!

I got into the habit of making Vision Boards many years ago. Back then, I was a single mom, was doing good overall, but certainly had dreams for a better life. I didn’t know how I was going to get there and was just busy living my day-to-day life of working and raising kids, but I had a dream of more. So, I made a Vision Board just with BIG dreams manifested on it. I had no idea on how I was going to get there, but I had a picture of what I envisioned for my life.

A few years ago, I found that Vision Board behind some items as I was cleaning my bedroom. And what do you know- EVERY SINGLE item on that board had come true, with the exception of one thing and that was having 6 pack abs (lol). I had fallen in love with a wonderful man and was married and living my best life, I had paid down all of my credit card debt and had money in savings, and I was driving my dream car, a Mercedes E350 sedan. I had even pasted a picture of a tropical vacation sitting on a beach and yes, I had travelled to Hawaii several times since that Vision Board was made.

Now you know why I am a believer in Vision Boards and I continue to make them to this day because life is not a destination, but rather a journey. Just because I met those goals doesn’t mean that I don’t have more goals to achieve.

So, what exactly is a Vision Board? It is exactly what the name implies. What visions do you have for your life? Take those and put it down on a board.  Now in the old days, I would literally go get a big piece of poster paper and gather magazines and cut out pictures and paste them on it.  Now I make an electronic one on my computer by using Microsoft Publisher. You can use whatever program you have. Basically, a Vision Board is a collage of your dream life! Put down inspiration quotes, pictures, whatever it is that will inspire you to reach those goals.

Now, as I said above, I had to no idea how I was going to make my visions come true when I made that Vision Board. But obviously a dream is only a dream without specific goals and strategies to make them happen.  But we’ll tackle that another time. For now, just put down your BIG DREAM ideas.

Once you have made your Vision Board, be sure to put it somewhere you can see it on a daily basis. Put it above your bed, in your bathroom, on the refrigerator, it doesn’t matter. I have my electronic one set as my computer screensaver so that I see it multiple times a day.  And a quick hint here too- if you make it electronically and still want a printed version, simply send it to Staples or another store and have it printed out and save your precious ink cartridges on your home printer 😊.

One quick note: please know that some of your dreams are not going to happen in a single year. It may take many years to achieve that goal and that is perfectly OK. We can’t move forward if we don’t know where we are going!

Making a Vision Board can be FUN! Make it a party! Ask your kids to do one with you and make it a fun project. My daughter did one for years with me. I’ve done them with girlfriends too and make it a Girls Night complete with wine! Don’t think of this as ‘another task’ to do- this should be a FUN thing to do. A time to focus on what you want your life to look like in the future! How can that NOT be FUN?
